Philadelphia rockers June Divided have been together for only 3 years, released an EP and full length, two videos on MTV, mtvU, MTV Hits and VH1 Mega Hits Latin America; radio success with single “Secrets” and performed on Warped Tour, SXSW, Summerfest, Florida Music Festival, Canadian Music Festival, and more! We recently chatted with the 2014 Artist On The Verge Top 3 Finalists about their inspirations, goals, and predictions for the future of music business.
NMS: When and what inspired you to start making music?
June Divided: I think it’s something we all individually gravitated toward at a young age. For me personally, I can’t even remember why exactly. It was something I was just good at and it had always made sense to me to do it.
Who are some of your influences?
The 16 year old me wanted to be Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World, ha. That band writes great songs. As a band, we love Mutemath’s experimental side, and Manchester Orchestra’s dynamics. We’re currently working on new music so we’re drawing influences from all over the place right now- anything from Metric to Silversun Pickups, Foster the People to Modest Mouse.
What is the most enjoyable aspect of your career?
I used to think that writing our songs was most enjoyable, but I’ve learned that the only thing that tops that feeling is seeing strangers sing along to what we wrote because they relate to it.
What are you most excited about in the music business in the next 5, 10 years?
The future in this business could seriously be anybody’s game. This industry is pretty unpredictable, especially in the state that it’s in currently. I want to see how musicians and members of this industry come together to make it a better place. Also, I want to see what happens to rock music. I hope it continues to reinvent itself but never die. I’m optimistic about both of these things.
What advice do you have for artists just starting out?
Sometimes I feel like we’re still just starting out ourselves! But here’s what I know so far: Be brutally honest with yourself about your skill and challenge yourself every day. Keep an open mind but be mindful of what might be in your best interest. Work your ass off, be grateful for those who help you, don’t be a dick and most importantly… Accept the fact that if you are making music for the all right reasons, you’ll never truly be able to escape it.
